Specifications
The 3.8m reaches most first-floor window frames and the eaves of a standard two-storey UK home with room to work safely. Working height is approximately 4.8m — enough for first-floor exterior painting, clearing guttering, and accessing soffits and fascias on single-storey extensions.
Fully collapsed, the 3.8m measures 85.5cm and fits in the boot of a hatchback. A securing strap keeps it stored flat until you need it. No roof rack required.
Height Guide
Ladder height and working height are not the same. Most buyers get this wrong — here's how to choose correctly.
Working height = ladder height + 1m
A 3.8m ladder gives you a working height of roughly 4.8m — enough to reach most single-storey guttering (typically 3.5–4m) with comfortable clearance.
For two-storey guttering, you need at least 4.4m
UK two-storey homes typically have guttering at 5–5.5m. A 4.4m ladder (working height ~5.4m) covers most — the 5.0m covers all with room to spare.
Never stand on the top three rungs
BS EN 131 and the Ladder Association both specify this. Your usable height is the ladder height minus the top three rungs (~60cm). Factor this in when choosing your size.
Quick rule
Add 1m to the height you need to reach. That's your minimum ladder height. When in doubt, size up — it's easier to work with a longer ladder than one that doesn't quite reach.
Safety Standard
"Meets EN 131 specification" and "sold online" are not the same thing. Most telescopic ladders have no verifiable safety claim at all.
EN 131-6 covers telescopic ladders specifically
Introduced in 2019, EN 131-6 sets the requirements for lock mechanism integrity, rung strength under dynamic load, and stability under lateral force. It is the relevant UK standard post-Brexit.
Most ladders sold online carry no standard at all
Independent testing by the Ladder Association found that 4 in 5 telescopic ladders sold through online marketplaces failed EN 131 testing. No labelling. No specification. No recourse.
The Ashcroft Pro is built to meet it
150 kg load rated. Dual-button anti-pinch locking pins. Controlled retraction mechanism. Not because it's a selling point — because it is the minimum a ladder you climb should meet.
Why It Works
Dual-button anti-pinch lock
Both buttons must be pressed simultaneously to retract. Each rung locks individually as you extend — the ladder stays exactly where you set it.
Compact when folded
Fits in a car boot, under the stairs, or in a narrow cupboard. A securing strap keeps it flat for storage and transport.
Aluminium alloy frame
Rust-proof and rated for outdoor use — guttering, fascias, exterior painting — not just indoor tasks. Non-slip rubber feet on all models.
30cm rung spacing
Consistent step spacing throughout — no awkward gaps. Widened pedal design (38mm) gives stable footing at every height.

Keep tools within reach and your ladder stable on any surface.
FAQs
For most UK two-storey properties — guttering at around 5–5.5m — the 4.4m ladder (working height ~5.4m) covers the majority of jobs. The 5.0m gives extra clearance for taller properties or dormer extensions. If you're unsure, size up: a ladder with too much reach is easier to work with than one that falls short.
Yes, provided you use it correctly. Do not stand on the top three rungs. Ensure the feet are on firm, level ground. On the 4.4m and 5.0m models, the included triangle stabilisers widen the base footprint — use them for any leaning work against a wall or fascia. The roof hook provided on these models can be fitted to guttering or a roof edge for added security.
EN 131 is the British and European safety standard for ladders. EN 131-6 covers telescopic ladders specifically, and sets requirements for rung strength, lock mechanism integrity, load capacity, and stability. Our ladders are built to meet this specification — including the 150 kg load rating and the dual-button anti-pinch locking system required under the standard.
Not without a stair leveller attachment. On an uneven or stepped surface, standard ladder feet cannot sit level — using a ladder on stairs without levelling equipment is unsafe. Our Ladder Stair Leveller is designed specifically for this and is available separately.
Extension is rung by rung — each rung clicks into place independently. Full extension takes around 30–45 seconds. Retraction is triggered by pressing both buttons on each rung simultaneously (the anti-pinch mechanism requires both to be pressed), then lowering. Most users complete a full retraction in under a minute.
