Choosing the Right Ladder
For most UK two-storey properties, guttering sits at around 5–5.5m. The 4.4m ladder (working height ~5.4m) covers the majority of jobs. The 5.0m gives extra clearance for taller properties or dormer extensions.
When in doubt, size up. A ladder with too much reach is easier to work with than one that falls short.
Working height is how high you can safely reach from the ladder — approximately 1m more than the ladder's maximum height. A 3.8m ladder gives a working height of roughly 4.8m.
This is the figure that matters when choosing your size. Always select a ladder whose working height comfortably clears your task height.
For single-storey guttering, the 3.2m or 3.8m is sufficient. For two-storey guttering and fascias, you need the 4.4m or 5.0m — both include triangle stabilisers and a roof hook for secure positioning against walls and guttering.
Fully collapsed lengths by model: 2.6m → 73.5cm · 3.2m → 79cm · 3.8m → 85.5cm · 4.4m → 91.5cm · 5.0m → 97cm.
All five models fit in a standard hatchback or estate boot without folding the seats. A securing strap is included on every ladder to keep it flat during transport.
Safety & Standards
EN 131 is the British and European ladder safety standard. EN 131-6, introduced in 2019, covers telescopic ladders specifically — rung strength, load capacity, lock mechanism integrity, and stability under test conditions.
Independent testing by the Ladder Association found that 4 in 5 telescopic ladders sold online fail basic EN 131 requirements. A ladder built to meet EN 131 specification gives you a defined, documented safety baseline.
Yes, provided you follow correct usage. Never stand on the top three rungs. Ensure the feet are on firm, level ground. On 4.4m and 5.0m models, use the included triangle stabilisers for any work against a wall or fascia. The roof hook can be fitted to guttering or a roof edge for added security.
Not without a stair leveller. On an uneven surface, the ladder base cannot sit level — this is unsafe. Our Ladder Stair Leveller creates a flat, stable base across stair treads in minutes, with no installation required.
Extend rung by rung — each rung clicks into place individually before you move to the next. To retract, press both buttons on each rung simultaneously (the anti-pinch mechanism requires both to be pressed at once), then lower. Never force the rungs — if resistance is felt, check all locking pins are fully engaged before proceeding.
